At the Nintendo Direct livestream a few weeks back, fans speculated that they might learn who the last remaining character in the extensive “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” lineup would be. Instead, we found out that Chris Pratt will be playing Mario in a feature film.
But today, in Nintendo’s final “Mr. Sakurai Presents” livestream, game director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that the last fighter to be added to “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” will be Sora from the “Kingdom Hearts” series. The “Kingdom Hearts” games, first released in 2002, feature characters from the Disney and Pixar universes. Sora is the main character in the franchise, wielding a keyblade — but a small chain with a Mickey Mouse logo dangles from his weapon. Though Sora is a video game fan favorite, some might find it a little jarring to see a Mickey Mouse shape alongside characters like Mario and Pikachu. Sora comes with nine songs and a new stage, the Hollow Bastion, which is a castle from the “Kingdom Hearts” games.
This marks the 82nd playable character to be added to the beloved game, which was released for Nintendo Switch in December 2018. But “Doom” fans can at least pretend to be “Doom Slayer” with a new Mii outfit — other Mii outfits include characters from “Splatoon.”

Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will truly be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s final expansion, as creator and director Masahiro Sakurai said goodbye to the game at the end of the last Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct. Both Nintendo and Sakurai previously confirmed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate support was coming to an end, but some fans clung to hopes it was a fake-out and that a third Fighters Pass would be announced.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released at the end of 2018, but its continuous stream of DLC has consistently kept it in the public eye. Nintendo has peppered Super Smash Bros. fighter reveals throughout its Direct presentations, and even at the annual The Game Awards. These character announcements have often been as highly anticipated as brand new games during Nintendo Directs, especially as the close proximity between their reveals and releases mean players quickly get to experience them afterward.
The final «Mr. Sakurai Presents» Nintendo stream revealed that Sora is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the game’s final DLC character. The Kingdom Hearts character’s full moveset, new Hollow Bastion stage, DOOM and Splatoon Mii Fighter costumes, and more were revealed, and no mention of a Fighters Pass Vol. 3 ever came. After sharing some of the game’s impressive milestones, Sakurai thanked Super Smash Bros. developers and fans and bid the game a last farewell, saying:
The final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct is nearly here, with fans anxiously awaiting the reveal of the game’s final DLC character. Super Smash Bros Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai, has a message for fans ahead of the show that perhaps signals the grandeur of the incoming announcement.
It came as both a surprise and a disappointment during the last Nintendo Direct when the final Ultimate DLC character wasn’t announced. Rather than unveiling it during the Direct, Nintendo announced a special Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct for the final character’s reveal, happening tomorrow, October 5, at 7am PT and 10am ET. Ever since, the internet has been in hysterics, as the finality of the situation has started setting in, that in no time at all, Ultimate’s roster will be complete, and no more characters will be added. Naturally, the speculation over the final character has been intense, with one leak pointing towards Kingdom Hearts’ Sora as the final character.
In a follow-up tweet, Sakurai conjectures a bit about the identity fo the final character. «The new fighter may be a character you don’t know, and each one may be different from the character you are free to expect,» they write, speaking to the large variety of fans’ desires and expectations. They end the tweet positively, hoping for those who tune in to enjoy the broadcast, and that they «enjoyed recording it» themselves. Those who have tuned into previous Smash Directs, like the one for Ultimate’s Pyra and Mythra, will know that the recordings feature a jovial Sakurai, who is always in good spirits to show off the game.
